LipiDye fluorescent probe for lipid droplet monitoring in live cells

LipiDye lipid droplet Green* is a new highly sensitive fluorescent probe for detecting lipid droplets in live or fixed cells. In this, let’s review the characteristics of this dye which is compatible with live cell imaging.

Lipid droplets store neutral lipids, and are mostly seen in the adipose tissues. The size of lipid droplets in adipocytes is >10 μm. They can be detected by conventional lipid droplet staining methods like Nile Red or Oil Red O… However, the size of lipid droplets in non-adipocytes is often too small (~0.1 μm) to be detected by these dyes.

This is where, LipiDye can be of particular interest when willing to analyze fine small lipid droplets in non-adipocyte cells or during adipogenesis.

LipiDye lipid droplet Green in action

LipiDye lipid droplet Green (cat. nr 194FDV-0010) is selectively incorporated into lipid droplet and gives out green fluorescence (no fluorescence in solution and very limited in the cytoplasm). Non cytotoxic, LipoDye is compatible with both live for Live Cell Imaging and fixed cells (ideally with paraformaldehyde).

This fluoresencent lipid dye also display a high Signal-to-Noise ratio and photo-stability (Exc. – Em. spectrum: 405 nm – 521-530 nm).

  1. Thank you very much. Are there any recommended concentrations while using in long-term live cell imaging experiments?

    1. Dear Amruta,
Thank you for reading our blog.
For adipocytes, 1 µM LipiDye (0.1-1% DMSO) is desirable. For other cell types, concentrations depend on cell types. Therefore, there is a need to optimize LipiDye concentrations on a case by case basis.
      I hope this helps.
      Regards,
      Philippe
