New Zika virus monoclonal antibodies

Abnova offer a series of new monoclonal research antibodies to support the study of the Zika virus. These are available through tebu-bio across Europe. Let’s take a look at these monoclonals, 100% validated for immuno-assay applications.

Recently, more and more attention has been focused on the Zika virus (ZIKV). According to the World Health Organisation, it was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in monkeys and subsequently in Humans in 1952,  since when repeated outbreaks have been reported. Nearly 70 countries have documented ZIKV transmission, leading up to the present outbreak in Brazil since 2015 which has brought the virus to the attention of the general public.

Although asymptomatic in about 80% of ZIKV infections, or presenting flu-like symptoms, scientific consensus is that this mosquito-borne flavivirus is a cause of microcephaly, Guillain-Barré syndrome as well as other neurological complications which are being investigated.

ZIKV infection is diagnosed by serological assays, cytokine profiling, and RT-PCR testing. Serological assays can fail to clearly identify ZIKV when in presence of Dengue or other flaviviruses, so RT-PCR is the most reliable method to specifically detect the virus. Antibodies targeting different protein components of the Zika virus can be very useful to scientists for both basic research and for use as potential diagnostic reagents. Recently, Abnova have released a new set of monoclonal antibodies guaranteed for Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays (ELISA) and Lateral Flow Immuno-Assays (LFIA).
