Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) is a regularly used buffer in biological research. The phosphate ions help maintain a constant pH around neutral. The osmolarity of solution typically matches that of the human body (isotonic solution). PBS can act as a diluent for many experimental preparations and is non-toxic to cells. This preparation contains 0.1% sodium azide as a preservative and is 10X concentrated to be diluted 10-fold to the working concentration.

Tween Tris buffered saline is suitable for multiple applications including biological diluent buffer for antibodies or other biologics. Visit our newly expanded web site at www.rockland.com for methods using this and other buffers. This product is a 10X concentrated stock solution and should be diluted appropriately with distilled, deionized water or equivalent to its final working concentration. This buffer consists of 1.0 M Tris HCl, 1.5 M Sodium Chloride and 0.1% (v/v) Tween-20 at a pH of 7.5. Meticulously prepared using ultra pure reagents dissolved in highly polished pharmaceutical grade deionized water.

EDTA is widely used for scavenging metal ion in biochemistry and molecular biology. Ion depletion is commonly used to deactivate metal-dependent enzymes, either as an assay for their reactivity or to suppress damage to DNA or proteins. In tissue culture EDTA is used as a chelating agent that binds to calcium and prevents joining of cadherins between cells, preventing clumping of cells grown in liquid suspension, or detaching adherent cells for passaging. EDTA is also known to inhibit a range of metallopeptidases, the method of inhibition occurs via the chelation of the metal ion required for catalytic activity.

SDS, sodium dodecyl sulfate is an anionic surfactant. SDS is commonly used in laboratory as component of buffer for cell lysis, cell lysis during DNA extraction and mostly in SDS-PAGE running buffer. Indeed, SDS is an anionic detergent applied to protein sample to linearize proteins and to impart a negative charge to linearized proteins.
