Involved in innate immune responses, they participate in the elimination of infected or tumor cells. NK cells express invariant NK receptors as well as CD56 and/or CD16 markers. Thus, two main subpopulations are found in the blood: CD56dim CD16+ NK cells (>90% of NK cells) characterized by a low capacity of cytokine synthesis and proliferation but a very high non-MHC cytotoxicity and CD56bright CD16dim/- NK cells (<10% of NK cells) characterized on the contrary by a high production of cytokines and a strong proliferative potential but a low cytotoxic activity.
